Balancing technical foundational knowledge and expressive artistic play, guided by Jocelyn Murray Boyne, you’ll explore everything from the science of light-sensitive chemicals to the magic of watching an image emerge in a bath of water.

What the workshop covers:

– Chemistry + Prep: Chemical preparation and preparing surfaces for printing
– Exposures: Exposure times using both natural sunlight and UV sources
– Photo-Negatives: Print using your own photos using either your own digital photos or analog negatives
– Collage + Layering: Brief exploration of collage techniques, experimenting with layering botanicals, found objects, and transparencies to create depth and narrative
– Toning: How to shift the signature “cyan” blue into deep blacks, sepia tones, or muted greys using natural tannins like tea, coffee, and botanical baths

What to bring:

A selection of digital photos you’d like to turn into negatives (instructions for submission will be sent upon booking), any flat objects with interesting silhouettes (lace, dried flowers, feathers), and an apron to protect your clothes from the “blue.”
