Caoimhe Dalton
Caoimhe Dalton is a painter and printmaker based in Dublin, Ireland, with a strong focus on traditional, hands-on techniques. She holds an Honours degree in Fine Art Print from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and has furthered her studies at Academie Minerva in the Netherlands. She trained in classical painting and drawing at the Barcelona Academy of Art and more recently spent time studying painting at the Nerdrum Studio in Norway.
A member of Black Church Print Studio since receiving the John Kelly RHA Award in 2019, Caoimhe regularly teaches workshops on the studio’s teaching board. Her work, which spans intaglio, lithography, monotype, and oil painting, has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is held in collections such as the State Art Collection and Limerick City Gallery of Art.
Caoimhe's Classes
Spend a weekend immersed in the classical tradition of self-portraiture in oil paint. This two-day workshop is open to both beginners and more experienced painters looking to refine their skills.
Explore the rich history of the self-portrait, from the Old Masters to contemporary interpretations, before working from life using yourself as the subject.
Over the weekend, you’ll study facial anatomy, learn the properties of the oil painting medium, develop preparatory sketches and underpaintings, and learn to build up your portrait using alla prima painting techniques and glazing.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a deeper understanding of oil painting methods and a strong start – or even a completed – self-portrait.
Not all materials are provided. We suggest that you bring the following:
- 3 flat square paint brushes of varying sizes
- 3 round head paint brushes of varying sizes
- Whatever paints you have (Suggested paints: mars black, titanium white, raw umber, cadmium red or red vermillion, mars yellow, brilliant yellow light)
- Palette and small clip-on tub for oil
- Unstretched, ready prepped canvas with ground already applied (Recommended A3 size)
The workshop will run from 10am – 5pm, with a 45 minute lunch break. Feel free to bring a packed lunch or explore the many local cafes.
