This is more than just an exploration of watercolour as a medium – it is an exploration of the self through connecting with your practice.
Guided by artist, educator, and circle facilitator Nick Cruz Velleman, this 6-week course is designed for those drawn to painting for its mindful, restorative qualities, and perhaps who have felt intimidated by watercolour’s reputation for being “too difficult.”
Through specially curated practice exercises exploring a range of topics, you’ll familiarise yourself with the medium and practice, working with it rather than against it, so you can learn to trust your flow.
As you paint, you are invited to notice your thoughts, feelings, and responses that arise as you face challenges, happy accidents, and new discoveries.
Each session will use a circle-format approach for sharing and discussion to create a group dynamic grounded in reflection. Gently led by Nick, these conversations will help you overcome obstacles and identify what resonates with you in the creative process. You are welcome to share as much (or as little) as you are comfortable with.
Build confidence, embrace the medium’s natural flow, and find your unique artistic touch in this playful, supportive group environment. Suitable for beginners, or those looking to deepen their practice.

WEEK 1: Vision vs. technique vs. mindset
WEEK 2: Water management
WEEK 3: Colour mixing
WEEK 4: Light and layering
WEEK 5: Wet techniques
WEEK 6: Finding your process and continuing practice
Materials needed:
– Beginner watercolor set: ideally no more than 12 colors
– One watercolor palette (for example, if you’re using pigments from a tube or if your set doesn’t already include one)
– One medium watercolor brush, round or square
– One large watercolor brush, round or square
– Pad of watercolor paper, at least 24 sheets, A4 140lb/300gsm
Free Intro Session:
Feb 8th, 11am – 12pm
A short demonstration of “The Three Most Common Mistakes in Watercolour”, followed by course Q+A with Nick.

Nick Cruz Velleman
Nick is an artist and educator who leads creative sessions using watercolor, drawing, and observation to help access calm, clarity, and connection. With experience teaching in high schools, museums, and art institutes, he brings warmth, depth, and a unique approach to art as a restorative practice. The mindful presence he finds in painting and drawing is what keeps bringing him back to his creative practice – and what he loves sharing with others.
