Deepen skills and refine techniques in clay
Develop confidence in more complex making with clay.
This intermediate course is designed for makers who already have a foundation in hand-building and want to deepen their skills and refine their techniques. Building on existing knowledge of pinching, coiling, and slab construction, you will learn how to combine and manipulate these techniques to create more refined sculptural or functional forms.
Guided by Grace Ryan, you will cover structural problem-solving, focusing on precision, execution, and how to finish each piece. As well as integrating classic techniques and clay methods, you’ll learn to develop your own approach to form, proportion, and texture in creating individualised pieces that reflect your personal style.
This course is ideal for those who have taken a beginner class or have prior experience working with clay and want to bring their practice to the next level in a supportive, creative environment.
You’ll finish the course with a resolved ceramic piece (or series of pieces) that showcase your developing style and technical progress.
Participants are advised to bring an apron to protect clothing. All other materials provided.

Grace Ryan
Grace Ryan is a multidisciplinary artist based in Dublin whose practice spans sculpture, ceramics, print, and installation. Holding a First Class Honours in Fine Art Print from the National College of Art and Design (2023), her work is underpinned by feminist methodologies and a strong material sensitivity. Since graduating, she has been awarded the Agility Award, the Black Church Print Studio Graduate Award and has exhibited in a number of prominent exhibitions, including those at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) and The Library Project. Ryan has also completed international residency programmes and internships at PADA Studios in Lisbon and Quint in Vienna. Her work is included in the private collection of the Office of Public Works.
